Also known as Amritsari Daal, this is a simple variety of Whole Black Gram and Split Bengal Gram or Chana Daal served at Langar. I have used Split Black Gram instead of Whole Black Gram in this along with Bengal Gram. It is the most popular food served at Langar (charity) organized at different Gurudwaras across the State of Punjab. Langar is the community kitchen of the Gurudwaras and Vegetarian meals are distributed free of cost to people regardless of their religion, caste, gender, or economic status. People sit on the floor and eat together. It's maintained by the Sikh community volunteers. This dal is made on a day-to-day basis in every house in the State.

A very popular dal as well as a healthy one with proteins in abundance. North Indian Cuisine is as such very rich in nutrients plus due to the addition of dairy products it becomes even more healthy and beneficial. Though this dal is best when slow-cooked, it can be made in a pressure cooker too. Though it is cooked in Oil, traditionally it's served with a dollop of butter for that extra zing. It is enjoyed with both Rotis and Rice and it goes well with Naans as well.
